ABSTRACT
In this paper, a recognition system for printed music is introduced. Projection is used in the
preprocessing step and the music notations are recognized by contour tracing. A structural decomposition
technique and music knowledge are also used in the work. The system is significantly tolerant of noise,
rotation of the original image and local variation of thickness on staff lines. Diagrams demonstrating
some processing steps are shown and an example of output is given in the form of text file. The result
of the recognition is analyzed and discussed to evaluate the system.
Key words: Projection, Quadratic mean, Staff nucleus, Ideal height, Staff, Music knowledge, Contour tracing.
