Research Areas

Research interests of staff in the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology cover a broad range of areas.

The research priorities of the School are encompassed in two general areas, namely multimedia technologies and computational intelligence, with direct and potential applications in electronic commerce, manufacturing and the electronic delivery of educational services.

Technologies for Multimedia and Related Applications

Multimedia Communications
Quality of service specification and system support for distributed multimedia; design and synchronisation of distributed multimedia.

Image and Signal Processing
Digital video technology, video compression/ decompression techniques, removal of blocking artefacts and noise, image enhancement, medical imaging. Searching and retrieval of images from image databases via shape and other similarity measures.

Computer Mediated Communication and Multimedia Courseware
Application of information technology to course delivery and management; multimedia based course material and course delivery via the Internet.

Computational Intelligence

Optimisation Techniques
Application of fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and related heuristics to optimisation and control problems, financial modelling and scheduling.

Intelligent systems
Neural network architecture, evolutionary computing, integrated hybrid systems; business forecasting and data mining.

Operations and Production Management
Flexible manufacturing systems, re-engineering, reliability modelling.
