Master of Business Systems 
by Off-campus Learning

INTRODUCTION

The Master of Business Systems aims to provide an extended education and training in methods used in the design, development and applications of computer systems for the management of business operations. This involves the study of business-related computer techniques and business procedures leading to an understanding of the design, operation and control of computer systems. Applications include those in management, planning, scheduling, forecasting, production management, project management, financial management, business modelling, multimedia communications, electronic data interchange and other functional areas of business, industry and government.

This course is offered as a part-time off-campus learning course by the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology. It may be possible to transfer from the off-campus mode to the on-campus mode at Clayton.

This course is also offered as a part-time supported program with administrative partners in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Off-campus students need to make use of a personal computer and must have Internet access. Students should consult with the course director to ensure computer compatibility with software used in the course.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates with a recognised bachelor's degree in a cognate field or a relevant graduate diploma or a relevant honours degree, will normally be admitted to the course.

DURATION

The course is normally completed over two and one half years of part-time study.

COURSE STRUCTURE

To qualify for the Master of Business Systems degree students complete both Part A and B described below:

Part A

At least four (4) units from each of the following groups:

Part B

Up to four (4) units (at 4th and 5th level) with a maximum of two 9000 level units drawn from any postgraduate program of the university with approval from the relevant teaching department and Head of the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology (or nominee). Units may be selected from units listed in the Group I and Group II schedules.

CREDIT AND ADVANCED STANDING

Generally, students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted toward the award of any other degree or diploma. Where credit is granted, the number of units taken under Part B may be reduced. Units taken as part of the Master of Business Systems at the Clayton campus are considered to be units under the category of Part A.

Applicants who hold an honours degree in Business Systems from Monash University or Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Monash University will normally be granted advanced standing equivalent to four units.

Applications for Semester 1 should be submitted by mid November of the preceding year. Preference will be given to those applications received by mid September. Applications for mid year entry must be lodged by mid May.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

International students must provide evidence of English proficiency by fulfilling one of the following requirements:

  • English is the first language.
  • Satisfactory achievement in secondary or tertiary studies in an English speaking country.
  • English was the language of instruction in secondary or tertiary studies.
  • A score of at least 575 in the American Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL) and a score of 6 on the Test for Written Language (TWE).
  • A score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) test, with no band score less than 6.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS SYSTEMS

Student may choose to exit the masters program after completing eight units and take this award.
